Going on a cruise is an exciting unique experience, especially a Viking Cruise. Viking cruises are known for their immersive experiences and cultural explorations, as well as their more flexible itinerary that allows travelers to more fully explore the land and nearby ports.

Being so full of events and activities, you want to be able to unpack once and not have to worry about your outfits for the rest of the cruise. Knowing what to pack is not always clear though. You don’t want to pack your suitcase so full it won’t close, but you also don’t want to forget anything.

Plus, you want to make sure you have the right clothes for the different locations and activities you are going to. Consider packing for three main categories: clothes for land excursions, boat clothes, and evening wear. All options should be comfortable, and make you feel good about yourself.

Dress Code

Dress Code

Viking cruises are pretty casual. During the day, casual, comfortable clothes are recommended, such as shorts, jeans and T-shirts.

Viking cruises do not have a formal dress code for any event at night, instead, they ask for eloquent casual. This describes trousers and collared shirts, skirts, and dresses. Suit jackets, blazers, and ties are optional, but not required.

You may be turned away from some restaurants if you do not adhere to their dress code, so be sure to check ahead of time.

Choose a Color Theme

Choose a Color Theme

The smart idea is to choose a color theme for all the pieces you bring so you can bring fewer items while still having many different outfit combinations. Some people prefer a neutral color like black, white, or tan, that easily blends in with any environment and creates a classic look.

Others prefer a brighter theme, composed of their favorite colors, or one that pops against the blue sky and ocean.

Light-Weight Shirt

Light-Weight Shirt

A lightweight shirt is a staple choice for many, whether it is a loose t-shirt or a collared polo shirt. Not only is it easy to pack, but it can easily be layered under a sweater or jacket without bunching up or overheating you.

Loose Blouse

Loose Blouse

A loose blouse is not only comfortable and breathable but is versatile. It can be worn with a pair of shorts during the day and a skirt for dinner at night. It is a more fashionable look than a T-shirt, without being too formal.

Loose-Style Dress

Loose-Style Dress

A loose, flowy dress is a great choice for a cruise. It will keep you cool and comfortable, while still being feminine and chic. With the right choice, you can wear it from day to night without having to stop to change.

White Sneakers

White Sneakers

White sneakers go with any look from a flowy dress to jeans and a T-shirt. They are also practical and more supportive than other shoes. You will be doing a considerable amount of walking, so choose a comfortable pair with a grip for the various surfaces you will be on.

Outdoor Jacket

Outdoor Jacket

Bring a lightweight outdoor jacket that doesn’t take up a lot of space in your suitcase and that can easily be layered over a shirt or sweater. It will help protect you from the rain and wind on land and on the boat, and create an added layer of warmth.

Swimsuit

Swimsuit

If the weather is nice, or if there are indoor pools available, you may want to bring at least one swimsuit in case you go swimming, or even just want to sunbathe. A swimsuit is also a good idea for different spa treatments like a mud bath.

Scarf

Scarf

A scarf is a stylish and practical option that can be added to any outfit for a pop of color and added protection from the sun. It also comes useful if you are entering a place of worship and need to cover your head or shoulders.

Dressier Shorts

Dressier Shorts

If the weather is nice enough for shorts, consider choosing a dressier pair like cargo shorts. They are still comfortable and light while adding more structure and shape. They look great with a t-shirt or a collared shirt like a polo, giving you more styling options.

Chinos or Slacks

Chinos or Slacks

Chinos or slacks are a common bottom option on a cruise that can be worn all day, or just for the evening. They are formal enough to be worn to dinner, while still comfortable enough for walking and other activities. They pair nicely with a collared shirt, or a more casual shirt or sweater.

Sleepwear

Sleepwear

A common item people forget to bring is sleepwear and loungewear for in your cabin and to sleep in. Bring at least one comfortable pair with you made from breathable fabric such as cotton or linen.

Exercise Wear

Exercise wear or athleisure clothes work great if you plan to hit the fitness center, as well as for day wear. Modern exercise shorts, leggings, and tank tops will help keep you dry and comfortable during your excursions for the day while also being stylish.

Flip-Flops

Flip-Flops

Flip-flops are a comfortable option for when you are in your room or by the pool slide. They are also a quick, easy option to slip on if you want to go for a quick stroll on board. As a bonus, they weigh practically nothing in your suitcase.

Avoid Formal Evening Attire

Avoid Formal Evening Attire

As Viking cruises have adopted eloquent casual, there is no need to bring formal evening attire, unless you are attending an opera or ballet on land. Save yourself room and hassle by bringing more casual pieces that don’t need to be ironed and can be worn day or night.

Avoid Expensive Jewelry

Avoid Expensive Jewelry

Avoid wearing your most expensive jewelry such as diamonds, gems, and gold. Instead, opt for fake travel jewelry that looks like the real thing, but is significantly less valuable. That way you don’t have to worry about your jewels getting stolen or attracting thieves at the ports.

It will also be significantly less devastating if you lose or damage them.
