Sustainability Practices
Celio ensures quality, durability, and traceability and wants to be transparent. It believes in producing clothing in a better way that follows the best practices from sustainable development and the circular economy.
Celio only uses a tiny proportion of organic materials such as organic cotton or recycled materials such as recycled cotton, recycled polyester, and regenerated nylon.
Most of the fabrics it uses are either natural without relevant certifications, such as regular cotton or linen, or synthetic petroleum-based fibers such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and more.
Only very few of its collections are dedicated to sustainable fashion. Celio also uses a small amount of semi-synthetic fibers or regenerated cellulosic fabrics such as Tencel lyocell, modal, acetate, and viscose.
Tencel is an eco-friendly fiber made with wood pulp from certified sustainable forests. But only a low proportion of the materials used by Celio are environmentally friendly and sustainable.
Celio doesn't publish a list of its manufacturers and processing facilities on its corporate website. It works with global business associations to improve working conditions in its supply chain, but it isn't transparent enough about it.
The 2021 Fashion Transparency Index gave Celio a catastrophic and absolute lowest score of 0% based on how much the group discloses about its social and environmental policies, practices, and impacts.
Celio manufactures its clothes in many other East Asian countries where human rights and labor law violations still happen every day.
The French clothing retailer doesn't show any labor certification standard that ensures good working conditions, decent living wages, health, safety, and other human rights for workers in its supply chain.
Celio doesn't have any code of conduct that applies to its suppliers and subcontractors based on the regulations set by the International Labor Organization (ILO).
Celio doesn't disclose any information on how it assesses social and environmental compliance or if it conducts any internal or third-party audits.
Celio doesn't use exotic animal skin, hair, fur, or angora. But it uses leather, wool, and down feathers to manufacture many of its clothing pieces.
These animal-derived materials are cruel and unethical. They also harm the environment by producing greenhouse gases and waste. More sustainable alternatives exist.
Sustainability Goals
Celio has committed to reducing its environmental impact by using organic, natural, or recycled materials. It plans to manufacture 50% of its collection using more sustainable materials by 2024.
Its outerwear will be 100% made from recycled fabrics by 2025. Its denim will have a 100% score EIM by 2025. And 100% of its products will be certified Oeko-Tex by 2024.
