In 1942, the now-known classic, Casablanca premiered, starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart as romantic interests. Casablanca continues to be a cultural piece, with it still being shown in theaters, and with many still falling in love with the story, aesthetic, and characters.

Set in Morroco in World War II, the movie is filled with a variety of characters from refugees, to soldiers, to Sam the piano player, each with their unique costumes. If you are attending or hosting a Casablanca-themed party, it might be hard to choose which character’s style to reproduce.

Fortunately, with so many options, you are sure to find a style that you find interesting, and that you can find the right pieces for. Regardless of what you choose, your outfit should bring the same mystery, drama, and romance as the classic film.

Traditional Moroccan Clothes

Traditional Moroccan Clothes

With many of the characters being Moroccan, many are seen wearing traditional Moroccan clothes. To dress in a similar style, choose a long, loose robe, similar to a Djellaba worn by Moroccan men. For women, choose a full-length dress with long sleeves made of silky material, similar to a Kaftan.

For both, choose rich colors like blue, red, and green, and traditional patterns with intricate, colorful geometrical designs.

Long Trench Coat

Long Trench Coat

Several characters wear long coats in the movie, most notably Humphrey Bogart in a long trench coat. A trench coat is one of the easier options to choose from. It can be worn over the rest of your costume such as a suit, or your everyday modern clothes, and you will still be following the theme.

Tuxedo

Tuxedo

For a more formal choice, wear a white tuxedo with a squared pocket handkerchief like the one Humphrey Bogart wore. To further follow his look, pair it with black dress pants and a black bow tie.

Two-Piece Suit

Two-Piece Suit

Another choice for men and women is a two-piece suit in a solid neutral color like tan, grey, and black or one with pinstripes. Wear a matching solid color tie and squared handkerchief, or show off your personality with a fun pattern. For a more vintage look, wear suspenders instead of a belt.

Fez

Fez

The fez originated in Moroccan in the 19th century and is now seen worn by many cultures. In Casablanca, both Moroccan and non-Moroccan people are seen wearing it. It goes well with traditional Moroccan clothes, as well as with a classic suit.

Fedora

Fedora

Both Bergman’s and Bogart’s characters are seen wearing different versions of a fedora throughout the movie. It is an easy way to accessorize and add more detail to your outfit. Choose a plain solid color like Bogart's, or find one with a ribbon tied around it like Bergman’s.

Plain Long Gown

Plain Long Gown

For a feminine, eloquent look that is still on theme, choose a long plain evening gown, much like the one Bergman wears. One with a simple cut with no adornments is the closest style to the movie, but don’t limit yourself if you like a bit of flare and decoration to your dress.

Another iconic look of Bergman’s was her tan skirt suit. To wear something similar, choose a knee-length skirt and matching blazer. Wear a white or neutral-colored dress shirt or blouse underneath. Wear it as is or with a hat, hairpiece, or headband.

To wear heels similar to Bergman’s in the movie, choose ones in white, black, or both made of leather-like material. Choose a small heel instead of stilettos. If possible, find a pair with straps and with small detailed patterns throughout the material.

To further add retro detail to your look, consider thrifting vintage jewelry or finding costume jewelry in 1940s style. Many women wore large statement earrings, necklaces, and broaches made of topaz, amethyst, rubies, and sapphires.

Scarf or Wrap

Scarf or Wrap

Bergman’s character dawns a light scarf wrapped around her head and shoulders when she is not wearing a hat. Find a large, lightweight scarf that can be used as a shawl and a headwrap, depending on what your outfit requires.

Choose a neutral color to go with the film’s color theme, or use the scarf for a pop of color for the rest of your outfit.

Bergman and many of the supporting characters are seen wearing floral patterned blouses and dresses. Some even have beads as part of the floral pattern that shines on the screen. Stripes are seen throughout the film with pinstripes on suits, striped ties, and striped shirts and blouses. Choose white with black or navy blue stripes to look like you came from the film, or match your stripe colors to the rest of your outfit.
