Birkenstocks are popular sandals for their comfort, support, and ability to mold to your personal foot shape. When the weather is nice, it's time to bring them out. What about when the weather is not as nice? Can they be worn when it's raining?
Traditional Birkenstocks are not meant for water. They won’t necessarily get ruined if they get wet, but they aren’t built for the rain. The longer they are immersed in water, the more likely it will compromise the integrity of their sealant material.
The footbed is made from an absorbent suede material that creates comfort but absorbs moisture like a sponge. With enough water, they can become slippery, potentially causing you to lose your footing (and shoe). Wet suede can also attract bacteria, leading to potential blisters and skin infections.
Since traditional Birkenstocks shouldn’t get wet, the company has created an alternative sandal made from EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate), a light elastic material that is completely waterproof, while still having the well-known comfort and cushion of the classic version.
If your classic Birkenstocks do get wet, make sure to air dry them until they are completely dry.

About Birkenstock
Birkenstock started in 1925 in Germany, founded by Johann Adam Birkenstock, selling sandals all over Europe. In 1966, the shoe brand started selling its sandals overseas to America in health stores. In the 1970s they were associated with hippies, who were the main buyers of the shoes.
By the 1980s, Birkenstocks became more mainstream, with people of all ages and demographics purchasing this comfortable sandal. In recent years, they have had yet another comeback, trending with young adults, celebrities, and influencers.
Umbrella
Whether you are wearing Birkenstocks or other shoes when you get caught in the rain, an umbrella is a great way to help keep the rain off of you. An umbrella can also be a part of your overall look, matching your style and color preferences.

Rain Boots
Rain boots are a popular shoe choice that are one hundred percent waterproof, while still being fashionable. Knee-high rain boots look great with a classic coat and a pair of skinny or fitted pants.
Choose a neutral color like black or brown, or have fun adding a bright color or pattern.
Waterproof Shoes
Nowadays there are plenty of waterproof shoes that aren’t rubber boots, including ankle boots, and sneakers. You can find a style of shoes that match your needs and style without having to worry about your feet getting wet or your shoes being ruined when it rains.
Rain Jacket
A rain jacket does not just have to be a practical piece to throw on when it rains. It can be a stylish piece that fits your form well and adds to your overall look while also keeping you warm and dry.
Ball Cap
A ball cap is a versatile, light hat option that works with most outfits while also helping to protect your head and face from the rain. Choose one with your favorite team’s logo, a fun saying, or a pretty pattern.
Infinity Scarf
Infinity scarves were all the rage in the early 2000s. Several decades later, they are still a fashionable choice. An infinity scarf will help keep you warm in the rain, without being too bulky inside or outside your coat or sweater.
Cozy Socks
Regardless of what shoes you choose, adding a pair of thick, cozy socks will help keep your feet dry and warm all day long no matter how many puddles you step in. Consider choosing a pair in a fun color or pattern to peek out of the top of your shoes.
Knit Poncho
A knit poncho is a fun, boho alternative to a classic sweater or hoodie. A knit poncho will keep you warm and cozy, while also creating a unique shape and visual intrigue. Pair it with a pair of leggings or skinny jeans to show off your legs.

Jeans and a Cardigan
Jeans and a cardigan is a classic look that is perfect for a cloudy, rainy day. You will look and feel cozy and comfortable no matter the occasion or time of day.
Black Jeans or Leggings
Black jeans or leggings are a great staple to start with. Both create a solid canvas to add on to with different colors and textures. They also fit nicely into a shoe or boot, helping to show them off without covering them or dragging your pants on the floor.
Fuzzy Gloves
A pair of gloves does not just have to be practical, it can also be expressive and fun. Fuzzy gloves are a cute, unique alternative for gloves that add texture and boldness to your look.
Oversized Bag
If you want to show off your bag, consider choosing an oversized bag. An oversized bag won’t get overshadowed by your coat, umbrella, or other accessories and will pop against the rest of your outfit.
Accessorize with a bag made from recycled materials.
Bomber Jacket
A bomber jacket is a great choice for anyone. Its short length, casual but structured look pairs well with any casual, or smart attire and looks nice on a variety of body shapes and frames.
Beanie
If the weather is cold and rainy, a beanie will help keep your head warm while drawing attention to your face. Match your beanie to your shoes and mittens for a more cohesive look.
Pleated Skirt
A pleated skirt looks great under a coat or over a pair of rain boots. It helps create shape while still being structured enough to show off your silhouette. It is a sophisticated, chic choice.
